Not every backyard comes with room for a pool, a veggie patch and a ten-seater dining table. Plenty of Queenslanders live on smaller blocks, in townhouses or in character homes with a courtyard out the back. The good news? A small patio can be every bit as enjoyable as a big one. It just needs a bit more thought.
After more than 50 years of building patios across Queensland, we at Altec The Spacemakers have seen what makes a compact outdoor area feel cramped and what makes it feel like a proper extension of the home. Here are our seven favourite ways to get the most out of every square metre.
1. Start With the Right Roof
The roof sets the mood for the whole space. On a small patio, a heavy, dark roof can make things feel boxed in and hot, especially in a Brisbane summer.
An insulated roof panel keeps the space noticeably cooler and quieter when the afternoon storms roll through. Choose a lighter colour to bounce light around, or add translucent panels or skylights to bring in natural light without the glare. A flat or gently sloping design also keeps the space feeling open rather than closed over.
2. Make It Usable All Year Round
A small patio you can use twelve months of the year is worth more than a large one you avoid for half of it. Outdoor blinds are one of the simplest ways to get there. Roll them down to block the western sun, keep out sideways rain or add a bit of privacy from the neighbours, then roll them up again when the weather is perfect.
If you want to go a step further, a patio enclosure turns your outdoor area into a light, bright room that works in any season. It’s a great option for smaller homes that could use an extra living space.
3. Choose Furniture That Works Hard
In a compact space, every piece of furniture needs to earn its spot. Look for:
- Folding or stackable chairs you can put away when you need the floor space
- Bench seating with storage underneath for cushions and outdoor gear
- A round table, which is easier to move around than a square one
- Furniture with slim legs or open frames, so you can see more of the floor
Fewer, better pieces will always feel more spacious than lots of small ones.
4. Go Vertical With Greenery
When floor space is tight, think up rather than out. Vertical gardens, wall planters and hanging baskets add colour and life without taking up room underfoot. Queensland’s climate is kind to plenty of low-fuss plants, so succulents, ferns and trailing plants are all easy wins.
Greenery also softens hard edges like posts and fences, which helps the whole area feel more relaxed and less like a building site.
5. Keep the Decor Light and Simple
A few well-chosen touches go a long way. Cushions and an outdoor rug in a light colour palette will make the space feel fresher and larger. Lanterns, a couple of pots and a small side table are often all you need.
Mirrors made for outdoor use are a clever trick too. Placed well, they reflect light and greenery and make the area look deeper than it is.
6. Light It Up for the Evenings
Queensland evenings are made for being outside, so plan your lighting from the start. Downlights built into the patio roof keep things tidy and out of the way, while festoon lights or a few warm lamps add atmosphere. A ceiling fan is well worth including too. On a humid summer night, it can be the difference between heading inside and staying out for dessert.
7. Plan It Properly From Day One
Smaller blocks often come with tighter rules. Boundary setbacks, site cover and council requirements can all affect what you can build and where it can go. Getting this right early saves a lot of time and stress later.
