Outdoor blinds are some of the hardest working things around a Queensland home. They block the afternoon sun, keep out sideways rain and give you a bit of privacy from the neighbours. After a long, humid summer and a few big storms, though, they can start to look a little tired.

The good news is that a bit of regular care goes a long way. Clean blinds look better, roll up more smoothly and last longer. Here’s the simple six-step routine we recommend at Altec The Spacemakers, whether your blinds are clear, mesh or fabric.

1. Pick a Mild, Overcast Day

Timing makes the job easier. Cleaning in the full midday sun means soapy water dries onto the blind before you can rinse it, leaving streaks behind. A mild morning or an overcast afternoon is ideal.

Try to avoid windy days too. Wet blinds flapping about are hard to work with, and you’ll want them fully lowered and still while you clean.

2. Brush Off the Loose Stuff First

Before any water goes near your blinds, lower them all the way down and give both sides a once-over with a soft brush, a microfibre cloth or a vacuum with a brush attachment. This lifts dust, cobwebs, leaves and pollen so you’re not just pushing grime around once things get wet.

Pay attention to the bottom rail and the side channels or tracks, as this is where dirt, grit and the odd spider love to gather. Skip stiff or wire brushes, which can scratch clear PVC and wear fabric.

3. Wash Gently With the Right Mix

For most outdoor blinds, warm water with a squirt of mild dishwashing liquid is all you need. Wipe it on with a soft sponge or cloth, working from the top down.

A few things to steer clear of:

  • Harsh chemicals such as bleach, solvents or strong household cleaners, which can damage materials and finishes
  • Abrasive scourers, which leave fine scratches, especially on clear blinds
  • High-pressure washers, which can force water into seams, stretch fabric and damage stitching

If your blinds came with care instructions, follow those first. Different materials have different needs, and the right approach keeps any product warranty on track.

4. Deal With Marks and Mould Early

In our climate, mould is the one to watch. Little black spots tend to appear where blinds stay damp, often near the bottom rail or in shady corners. Tackle them early with your mild soapy mix and a soft brush. The longer mould sits, the harder it is to shift.

Bird droppings, tree sap and leaf stains are the same story. Wipe them off as soon as you spot them, before the sun bakes them on and leaves a permanent mark.

5. Rinse Well and Let Them Dry Completely

Once they’re clean, rinse your blinds with a gentle spray from the garden hose to remove any soap residue. Leftover soap attracts dirt and can leave a dull film.

Then comes the most important step of all: let them dry fully before you roll them up. Rolling up damp blinds traps moisture inside the roll, which is exactly what mould needs to get going. Leave them down in the breeze for a few hours, or wipe off excess water with a clean towel to speed things up.

6. Check the Moving Parts

While the blinds are down, take a minute to look over the hardware. Check that the tracks are clear, the cords or straps aren’t fraying and that the blinds roll up and down smoothly without catching.

It’s also a good habit, especially in storm season, to roll your blinds up when strong winds are on the way, unless your blind system is designed to stay down in wind. A quick check of your care guide will tell you what’s right for yours.

How Often Should You Clean Them?

A light brush down every month or so keeps dust and cobwebs under control. A full wash two or three times a year is plenty for most homes. If you live near the coast, under big trees or beside a busy road, you might like to wash them a little more often.

When It’s Time for New Blinds

Even with great care, blinds don’t last forever. If yours are cracked, yellowed, torn or no longer roll up properly, it might be time to look at an upgrade.
